A four-day Memorial Day weekend gave me the chance to take a spur-of-the-moment trip to Pittsburgh; Harpers Ferry, W.V.; and Washington, D.C. The worst part: A youth soccer tournament booked up all hotels in a 50-mile radius of one of my stopping points and led to an uncomfortable night’s sleep in my car in a Walmart parking lot in the ever-so-appropriately named Maryland city of Hagerstown. You can bet I was haggard after that night, but a long-awaited trip to the Newseum — shrine to all things journalism — perked me up.
